Exploring family trees together

Exploring family trees together

Forgotten legacies and irretrievable heirs or communities thereof are not a new issue. For centuries, efforts to find heirs have been made, in particular if succession lines were broken and no last will had been deposited. In such cases, old documents such as church records, obituaries, registry offices and associated archives have to be studied laboriously in order to verify the entitlement of the community of heirs.

But how is it possible that legacies, deposits and plots of land, for example, have been forgotten for decades?

A glance at old city maps may provide some insight.

The bombing raids during World War II in particular changed the course of entire streets. Even during the time of the former German Democratic Republic, plots of land were expropriated and built over. Nevertheless, this was not always documented in the real estate records so that heir communities’ claims cannot always be raised easily.

Why have I been contacted by GenVista?

In the course of our work and efforts to completely unveil the community of heirs, we have come across you as a possible co-heir. Together with you, we want to find out whether our documentary evidence is correct. Should this be the case, we can work with you to arrange everything necessary so that you will be able act in your community of heirs.

Why have I not been notified by the probate / surrogate court?

A testator is obliged to settle his estate before death. Unfortunately, unforeseeable circumstances can prevent this matter from being settled. The courts as well as the public are not obliged to make up for this task. Nevertheless, there are legal regulations for this.
